The Return of Big Papi

Looks like the Red Sox will be getting Big Papi back in the lineup tonight.  I'm sure the Sox fans are stoked.  I wonder how much rust he'll have in his first few at bats.

Sports and Integrity

I love sports. I love the physical play, the teamwork, the individual effort,
and the all around joy that playing and watching can bring. I have noticed though
through the years with the increased pay for athletes and in a world where info can
be shared in a split second without thought, that some people are tarnishing the
teams, games, and sports we love. There are also those who shine a light on what good
sportsmanship is all about.

Just this week stories of doping in
cycling once again have overshadowed the Tour De France. Also news of the NFL looking
into gangs signs made it as a cover story. Danica and Milka's little fight also
overshadowed another drivers win at this weeks Indy Race. Everyone in basketball
knows Kobe and Shaq have been feuding in what seems like forever, but what about the
wives they cheat on. How many NFL players are going to whine, complain, and threaten
to skip camps over there already high pay? I love these games, but some days I hate
reading or listening to sporting news stories.

On the other side of
the coin, many people help elevate sports with their passion and compassion with
their actions. Olympian Eric Shanteau found he had testicular cancer right before
making it to the Olympic team, but rather than have surgery now, he choose to
fullfill his life-long dream of going to the Olympics, whether this is the right
choice or not, he made it with his heart and passion. One of the more popular Youtube
Videos this year was of the women's team of Central Washington softball players
carrying an injured player from the opposing team around the bases after she got
hurt. This shows true compassion and sportsmanship!

Well that is
all for now.

Sports Trades and MLB All- Stars

Got some deals going on in sports.
Finally, Jason Taylor heads out of Miami to play for Washington who seemingly has
lost DE Philip Daniels on the first day of training camp for the rest of the season!
Good move for both sides, as you knew Miami was not fond of Taylor this year. style="display: none;" />
And in baseball, the Brew Crew is making an effort to
get back in the playoffs for the first time since 1982. They acquired second baseman
Ray Durham from the San Francisco Giants in exchange for two minor leaguers. Durham
will look to take the struggling Rickie Weeks' lead off spot in the Brewers
lineup.

And last week the Phils' acquired SP Joe
Blanton to start to bolster their rotation. More needs to be done, but this is a nice
step for the Phils.

What did you think of these
moves, and who is next to get traded in MLB.

If you
have not listened yet, I have a new episode of my podcast "Around the Spectrum: Live
Sports Radio" uploaded at style="font-size: x-small; color:
#003399;">www.fantasyinsideronline.com
On this episode I welcomed
"Mr. Movies" Steve Miller to compare all- stars from the 90's and 2000s. Steve made a
90's all- star team, as I made the 2000's. We also discussed the all star game, Josh
Hamilton, Barry Bonds, Elton Brand, Baron Davis, Brett Favre, and Fantasy Football.
Let me know what you thought of this week show.
/>There are a few glitches in this weeks show, not to worry that will be fixed for
next week!

20 Million Reasons A-Rod SHould Have been in the HR Derby
Publicist Kim Etheredge said _extended="true" href="http://sportsbunch.com/nfl/players/Terrell_Owens/3014">Terrell
Owens had 25 million reasons to stay alive, well I think href="http://sportsbunch.com/mlb/players/Alex_Rodriguez/552">Alex Rodriguez has
20 million reasons to participate in the Homerun Derby. The choice of certain star
athletes to miss events of this magnitude is the root of the problem with lack of
connection between fan and player nowadays. When I noticed the article on ESPN this
morning that A-Rod wants to skip the Homerun Derby I wanted to toss my laptop off of
my balcony in hopes that it would fly into downtown Manhattan and hit Mr. Rodriguez
in his oversized ego-filled noggin.

"I
try to stay away from that," Rodriguez said, according to the New York Daily News.
"My responsibility is to the href="http://sportsbunch.com/mlb/teams/New_York_Yankees/18"> href="http://sportsbunch.com/mlb/teams/New_York_Yankees/18">New York Yankees _extended="true">. I need my swing to be at its best."
_extended="true" />There are two things that really bother me with his quotes. Try to
stay away from that? He's been in the derby 3 times in his career. Why not enter the
contest that's hosted by your hometown in such a ceremonial setting like the last
All-Star Game at Yankee Stadium? His responsibility is to the href="http://sportsbunch.com/mlb/teams/New_York_Yankees/18"> href="http://sportsbunch.com/mlb/teams/New_York_Yankees/18">New York Yankees _extended="true">, while I do understand that, but shouldn't some
responsibilities be owed to the thousands of his fans both men and children who would
remember this for the rest of their lives? Not to mention that these are the same
fans that pay his salary by buying mass amounts of his memorabilia, scores of
tickets, and surrender many a good night sleep by staying awake until 1am to watch
him take his swings during games on the west coast. I felt the same way last year
when href="http://sportsbunch.com/mlb/players/Barry_Bonds/61">Barry Bonds wouldn't
enter in his final All Star appearance in San Francisco too. This is what I mean by
loss of connection with today's fan and major leaguers.
_extended="true" />The same thing upsets me every year in the NBA Dunk contest when
LeBron, Kobe, or even href="http://sportsbunch.com/nba/players/Vince_Carter/4408">Vince Carter don't
participate for the fans. At least Kobe and Carter have performed in it before. Their
excuse in the NBA is that it hurts their legs, baseball players will "mess with their
swings". I'm not sure how hitting batting practice fastballs, something most pros do
over 300 days a year, will mess with their timing.
_extended="true" />It's real simple A-Rod. Enter the contest, finish 6th like you
always do, have some fun, and get your lousy standing ovation. What's so hard about
that for the pre-madonna athlete to understand? Doesn't anyone remember that the All
Star festivities are all for the fans???

Baseball's Magic Number

What's the Magic Number in Baseball?

What's the Magic Number in
baseball? It's simply the number of games that the team leading a division needs to
win to ensure winning the division. If you're leading the division with ten games
remaining and your Magic Number is three, you only need to win three of those ten
games to ensure winning the division. Each time you win, your Magic Number goes down
by one. Each time your nearest divisional competitor loses, your Magic Number also
goes down by one. When your Magic Number hits zero, you've clinched the
division.

You calculate your Magic Number by looking at the number of
games remaining in the season and assuming that your nearest competitor will win all
of their remaining games. Then you see how many games you still need to win to
ensure the division title even with your nearest competitor winning all their
remaining games.

Since the mighty Minnesota Twins are still atop the AL
Central, I thought I'd start tracking their Magic Number. So I searched around on
the web and found two different methods of calculation.

One method,
endorsed by Major League Baseball is to take the number of games remaining for the
division leaders, add 1, then subtract the difference in the number of losses
between the leaders and the second place team. In other words:

M
= G1 + 1 - ( L2 - L1 )

Another
method, which I read on the web href="http://riot.ieor.berkeley.edu/%7Ebaseball/faq.html">here, starts with the
number of games remaining for the second place team, again adds 1, then subtracts
the difference in the wins between first and second place. Or:

M =
G2 + 1 - ( W1 - W2 )

So, is
either formula better than the other, or are they equivalent? And how am I just
supposed to know how many games these teams have left to play? Well, we can replace
the number of remaining games by the total number of games in the regular season
(162) minus the number of games played so far, which is just wins plus losses.

For the Major League formula, this becomes:

M = ( 162 - (
W1 + L1 ) ) + 1 - ( L2 - L1 )

Which expands to:

M = 162 - W1 -
L1 + 1 - L2 + L1

The
L1 cancels out, and the 162 and 1 combine, to leave:

M
= 163 - W1 - L2

For the second method, we
get:

M = ( 162 - ( W2 + L2 ) + 1 - (
W1 - W2 )

Which expands to:

M = 162 - W2 - L2 + 1 - W1 +
W2

In this case, the W2 cancels out. The 162
and 1 still combine, leaving us with:

M = 163 - L2 -
W1

Which is exactly what we ended up with using the
Major League formula.

In closing, the Magic Number for a division-leading
Major League Baseball team is simply 163 minus the number of wins the first place
team has, then minus the number of losses the second place team has:

align="center">M = 163 - W1 -
L2
